    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Set on a leafy liberal arts campus, the story follows a cynical and brilliant creative writing professor (Rachel Weisz) whose life is hitting a brick wall. Her husband (John Slattery), also a professor, is facing a massive sexual misconduct scandal that has made them social pariahs. Amidst the fallout, she becomes dangerously obsessed with a magnetic new faculty member, a young novelist named Vladimir (Leo Woodall). As her husband’s trial looms, she falls down a rabbit hole of lust and fixation, risking her career and sanity to bring her most scandalous fantasies to life. THE PROS This is a great series because Rachel Weisz is amazing as a narrator who is both incredibly sharp and totally unreliable. It hits an 8 because the show captures the "deliciously messy" world of academia in a way that feels honest and lived-in. The chemistry between Weisz and Leo Woodall is a total highlight, providing a sincere and tense exploration of desire and power. It’s a smart, subversive drama that handles heavy topics like "cancel culture" and aging with a winking sense of mischief rather than just preaching at you. The half-hour episode format is an amazing choice, keeping the pacing tight and the obsession feeling like a quick, frantic riptide. THE CONS It stays at an 8 because the shift between dark comedy and dead-serious drama can be an honest head-scratcher at times, making it hard to know exactly how to feel about the protagonist’s choices. It misses a higher mark because the series focuses so much on the professor’s perspective that the victims of her husband’s scandal feel a bit thin and sidelined. The pacing can feel like a bit of a slog in the middle if you aren’t interested in the internal politics of the English department. While the finale is a fair shout for the most shocking moment of the year, some viewers might find the narrator’s lack of remorse a bit too pained and hard to stomach. THE VERDICT 8/10. A sharp, sexy, and cynical character study that isn't afraid to get ugly. It’s an amazing watch for anyone who likes their stories about "obsessive love" with a side of razor-sharp wit. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Rachel Weisz, who also executive produced the series, was a massive fan of Julia May Jonas's 2022 novel and fought to keep the show's dark, "Fleabag-esque" tone honest to the source material. • Leo Woodall, who plays the titular Vladimir, actually worked with a writing coach to learn how a "hot-shot novelist" would realistically hold themselves and speak about their work during faculty meetings. • Despite the heavy subject matter, the production designers used warm "autumnal" palettes to create a cozy, romanticized look for the campus that contrasts with the cold, pained unraveling of the characters' lives. THE VIBE Like a forbidden book hidden under a pillow. It smells of old paper, red wine, and the metallic tang of a secret that’s about to break.
