Overview

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY It’s 1962, and the world is on the edge of nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Young Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Erik Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender) meet for the first time, long before they become Professor X and Magneto. While Charles is an optimistic Oxford grad, Erik is on a grim hunt for the Nazi who killed his mother. Together, they gather a group of young mutants to stop a secret society called the Hellfire Club from starting World War III. It’s a stylish origin story that shows how a deep friendship turned into the most famous rivalry in comic book history. THE PROS The chemistry between James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender is the best thing about the movie and earns it an 8. They make the bond between Charles and Erik feel real and painful, especially when their different views on humanity start to pull them apart. The 1960s spy vibe is a great touch, making the movie feel like a classic James Bond flick but with superpowers. Michael Fassbender’s "Nazi hunter" scenes are a total highlight, bringing a cold, gritty energy that the franchise really needed. It’s a smart, fast-paced reboot that manages to make the X-Men feel fresh again by going back to their roots. THE CONS It stays at an 8 because some of the younger mutants aren't nearly as interesting as the two leads, and their training scenes can feel a bit like a teen drama. It misses a higher mark because the special effects for some of the powers—like the guy with the sonic scream—look a little dated and goofy. January Jones as Emma Frost feels a bit flat, making one of the best comic book villains feel more like a mannequin than a threat. The final battle on the beach is exciting, but some of the green-screen work is a little too obvious, taking away from the grounded feel of the earlier scenes. THE VERDICT 8/10. A smart, stylish, and exciting restart for the mutants. It’s a good result for the series and a must-watch for the incredible performances from the two main stars. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Michael Fassbender originally didn't want to play Magneto because he didn't want to just copy Ian McKellen’s version, but he changed his mind when he realized the script focused on the character's darker, younger years as a survivor.• Jennifer Lawrence had to spend about eight hours in the makeup chair every day to be transformed into the blue-skinned Mystique, a process that was so tough it reportedly made her reconsider doing more sequels.• To prepare for their roles as best friends who eventually clash, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender spent a lot of time together off-set, which helped make their on-screen friendship feel natural and honest. THE VIBE Like a cold glass of whiskey in a 1960s lounge. It smells of expensive cigars, old leather, and the metallic tang of a submarine hatch.
