⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 10/10 THE SUMMARY Francis Ford Coppola did the impossible: he made a sequel that actually challenges the original for the crown. This is a sprawling dual narrative that functions as both a sequel and a prequel. On one hand, we watch Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) in the 1950s as he expands the family empire to Vegas and Cuba, slowly losing his soul and his family in the process. Parallel to that, we head back to the early 1900s to see a young Vito Corleone (Robert De Niro) arriving in New York as a penniless orphan and rising to become the neighborhood’s Don. It’s a tragic, gripping look at the American Dream and the heavy price of power. THE PROS This is a 10/10 because it hits "Epic Status" by being even more ambitious than the first film. Al Pacino is a force of nature here; his performance is cold, calculated, and deeply sincere in its portrayal of a man hardening into a monster. Robert De Niro is equally brilliant, capturing Brando's mannerisms without ever feeling like a caricature—it’s a masterclass in subtle acting. The cinematography by Gordon Willis, the "Prince of Darkness," is a winner, using deep shadows and amber tones to create an atmosphere that is absolutely suffocating. The script is a masterpiece of structure, seamlessly weaving the two timelines together to show how the father built what the son eventually destroys. It’s a gripping watch that demands your full attention and rewards it with some of the best cinema ever put to film. THE CONS It’s a 10/10, so finding a fault is basically an exercise in futility. At over three hours, the middle part can feel a bit sluggish if you’re not invested in the intricate senate hearings or the business dealings in Havana. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Historic Double: This was the first sequel to ever win the Oscar for Best Picture, a feat that wouldn't be repeated until The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King decades later.• Language Lessons: To keep his performance honest, Robert De Niro spent months living in Sicily, learning the local dialect so he could speak his lines with a genuine accent. Most of his dialogue in the film is in Italian.• Cold Shoulder: Al Pacino and Robert De Niro don't share a single second of screen time together in this movie because their stories take place decades apart. Fans had to wait until 1995’s Heat to finally see them face off in the same frame. THE VIBE Like a cold wind blowing through a gold-leafed palace. It smells of expensive cigars, old wine, and the metallic tang of lake water in the winter.
