⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Ridley Scott returned to the universe he helped create with a film that is part prequel, part philosophical deep-dive. A team of scientists, led by Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and funded by the elderly Peter Weyland, travels to a distant moon following ancient star maps. They hope to find the "Engineers"—a race they believe created humanity. What they find instead is a desolate military outpost and a biological weapon that threatens to wipe out life on Earth. It’s a stunning, big-budget epic that trades the simple claustrophobia of the original for massive questions about creation, faith, and the hubris of man. THE PROS This earns its 8/10 because it is one of the most visually stunning films of the decade. The production design is legendary, from the sterile, high-quality interiors of the ship to the massive, haunting ruins of the Engineer base. Michael Fassbender is a total winner as David; his performance as the curious, fastidious, and slightly menacing android is sincere and easily the best part of the movie. It hits the 8/10 mark because the sense of discovery and dread in the first two acts is a total banger, and the "self-surgery" scene remains a legendary, high-quality moment of body horror that is an honest shout for the ages. It’s an ambitious film that isn't afraid to be weird and cerebral, which is a total win for sci-fi fans who want more than just jump scares. THE CONS It misses the "epic status" 9 or 10 because the script features some honest-to-god head-shaking moments. Some of the scientists act in ways that are quality-deficient for experts—like trying to pet a space-cobra or running in a straight line from a falling ship—which can be a bit of a slow-roller for the immersion. The middle part gets a little messy with its mythology, introducing more big ideas than it can actually finish. The sets for the Engineer pyramid and the interior of the Prometheus were massive, real-life constructions that took up huge amounts of soundstage space. • David’s Inspiration: Michael Fassbender prepared for his legendary role by watching the high-quality performances of Peter O'Toole in *Lawrence of Arabia*, as well as studying Olympic divers to perfect David's precise, slightly eerie way of moving. • Secret Dialogue: The ancient language spoken by David to the Engineer was a high-quality reconstruction of Proto-Indo-European. The production hired a linguistics professor to ensure the dialogue was honest to what a "root" human language might actually sound like. THE VIBE Like a cold wind blowing through a giant stone temple. It smells of sterile air, wet cave walls, and the metallic tang of black viscous liquid.
