Overview

Prima ballerina Dominika Egorova faces a bleak and uncertain future after she suffers an injury that ends her career. She soon turns to Sparrow School, a secret intelligence service that trains exceptional young people to use their minds and bodies as weapons. Dominika emerges as the most dangerous Sparrow after completing the sadistic training process. As she comes to terms with her new abilities, she meets a CIA agent who tries to convince her that he is the only person she can trust.

    ​Jennifer Lawrence trades the bow and arrow for a Russian accent and a lot of trauma in this spy thriller that’s more about "uncomfortable stares" than high-octane action. ️‍♀️​ THE SUMMARY Dominika Egorova is a ballerina whose career ends with a snap, leading her to "Sparrow School"—a place where the curriculum is 10% surveillance and 90% using your body as a weapon. It's a bleak, slow-burn game of double-crosses between Moscow and a very tired-looking CIA.​ THE PROS Jennifer Lawrence is undeniably magnetic, even when the script is as cold as a Siberian winter. The film looks gorgeous, with a glossy, prestige feel that makes the brutal violence pop. It's refreshing to see a spy movie that doesn't rely on gadgets or car chases to build tension.​ THE CONS It’s a long sit at 140 minutes. The chemistry between Lawrence and Joel Edgerton is practically non-existent, making the central romance feel like two mannequins being pushed together. It also tries way too hard to be "edgy" with its graphic content, often crossing the line from gritty to just plain unpleasant.​ THE VERDICT A solid choice if you want a "grown-up" thriller, but don't expect John Wick. It’s a 6/10—slick, brutal, and a little too impressed with its own darkness.
