⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY This isn't your standard, dry musical documentary. It’s the life story of Pharrell Williams told entirely through LEGO animation. The film tracks his journey from a kid in the Virginia Beach projects with a "different" way of seeing the world to becoming one of the most influential producers in music history. It covers the highs of The Neptunes and "Happy," as well as the ego-driven lows, all while using plastic bricks to visualize the abstract way Pharrell hears beats and colors. THE PROS The decision to use LEGO is a clever move that actually serves the story. It allows the film to visualize Pharrell’s synesthesia—where he sees sounds as colors—in a way a standard live-action doc never could. It hits an 8 because the soundtrack is obviously top-tier, and the voice cast is a massive lineup of legends like Jay-Z, Gwen Stefani, and Snoop Dogg, all appearing as their LEGO counterparts. It’s funny, fast-paced, and has a level of creativity that makes it feel fresh. The "gritty" parts of his early life and the struggles of the music industry are handled with a surprising amount of honesty, despite the toy aesthetic. THE CONS Because it’s a Pharrell-produced project, it can feel a bit like a curated victory lap at times.
