Overview

They’ve been snatched by the "Jigsaw Killer," a mastermind who puts his victims in lethal "games" to test their will to live. With only a few tools and a series of cryptic tapes, they have to figure out how to escape before the clock runs out—but the cost of freedom might be a limb or a life. It’s a gritty, claustrophobic puzzle that launched a franchise and redefined the horror genre for a generation. THE PROS This is a masterpiece of low-budget ingenuity. It hits a 9 because the central mystery is genuinely gripping, trading the "slasher" vibe for a high-stakes psychological thriller. James Wan and Leigh Whannell created a gritty, dirty aesthetic that makes you want to wash your hands after watching it. The twist ending is an absolute win—one of the best in cinematic history—that completely recontextualizes everything you’ve just seen. It’s an honest, raw piece of filmmaking that relies on tension and smart writing rather than just the "torture" label it later became known for.
