⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY It’s March 31, 1943, and the legendary songwriter Lorenz Hart (Ethan Hawke) is having a proper nightmare. While his former partner Richard Rodgers is across town celebrating the opening night of their massive hit 'Oklahoma!', Hart is hunkered down in Sardi’s bar, drowning his sorrows in gin. Over the course of one booze-soaked night, he holds court with the bartender, clashes with old friends, and tries to win over a young student he’s obsessed with. It’s a real-time, claustrophobic look at a creative genius watching his relevance vanish while he struggles to stay sober and sane in a world that’s moving on without him. THE PROS Ethan Hawke is pure quality here, giving a performance that is easily a career-high; he’s almost unrecognizable as he captures Hart’s mix of brilliant wit and tragic desperation. It’s an 8/10 because Richard Linklater handles the real-time gimmick with a punchy, theatrical energy that makes a single bar feel like the center of the universe. Andrew Scott is a winner as Richard Rodgers, providing a cool, professional contrast to Hart’s chaotic energy that feels incredibly sincere. The script is absolute quality—sharp, funny, and deeply honest about the bitterness of seeing your best mate succeed without you.
