Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Peter Parker is back from his "internship" with the Avengers and he’s desperate to prove to Tony Stark that he’s ready for the big leagues. While balancing high school, a crush on Liz, and the world's most annoying best friend, Ned, Peter stumbles onto a gang of criminals selling alien tech scavenged from the Battle of New York. The leader is Adrian Toomes, aka The Vulture, a blue-collar bloke who’s just trying to provide for his family by flying around in massive mechanical wings. Peter has to learn that the hero makes the suit, not the other way around, before his "Homecoming" dance turns into a disaster. THE PROS Tom Holland is a total win; he’s the first actor to truly capture the "puny Parker" energy while being a punchy, capable hero. Michael Keaton as The Vulture is epic status—he’s a grounded, terrifyingly relatable villain who steals every scene he’s in. The car ride to the dance is quality tension and arguably one of the best-written scenes in the MCU. It’s an 8/10 because it trades the world-ending stakes for a quality street-level story that feels sincere and human. Zendaya as MJ and Jacob Batalon as Ned are winners, bringing a fresh, witty dynamic to the high school setting. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the "Iron Man Jr." vibe can feel a bit sluggish for fans who want a more independent Spidey—Tony Stark’s shadow looms very large over the whole movie. The "Suit Lady" AI voice is a bit of a head-scra... I mean, it’s a bit of an odd choice that takes away from Peter’s own problem-solving skills. It misses a 9/10 because some of the CGI during the Washington Monument sequence looks a bit quality-deficient compared to the practical stunt work. The pacing in the middle act during the decathlon trip is a bit of a damp squib. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and highly recommended as the perfect introduction to the MCU's wall-crawler. It’s a winner for the humor and the incredible twist. Go and watch it for the "Captain America PSA" videos—they’re quality comedy. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Nap Time Marketing: That famous poster of Spider-Man reclining with his headphones on and his school jacket over his suit wasn't a planned photoshoot. A photographer caught Tom Holland actually napping between takes, and the marketing team thought it was so on-brand for a tired teenager that they turned it into the main poster.• Scientific Background: To get into the mindset of a STEM student, Tom Holland went undercover at The Bronx High School of Science for three days. He used a fake name and an American accent; nobody realized who he was, though he did try to tell one student he was Spider-Man and they just thought he was mental.• Digital Dining: In the scenes featuring the high-tech monitors in Stark’s private jet and the digital readouts in Peter’s "Training Wheels" HUD, the scrolling code once again contains a hidden sushi recipe—the favorite recurring easter egg of the VFX crew since the 2002 original. THE VIBE Like a school backpack full of science projects and gadgets. It smells like pepperoni pizza, locker rooms, and new tech.
