Overview

For Peter Parker, life is busy. Between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen Stacy, high school graduation cannot come quickly enough. Peter has not forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away, but that is a promise he cannot keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro, emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn, returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Peter Parker is loving life as Spider-Man, but he’s haunted by a promise he made to Gwen Stacy’s dying father to stay away from her for her own safety. His world gets messy when an obsessed Oscorp fanboy, Max Dillon, turns into a walking electric generator named Electro after a freak accident with some eels. Meanwhile, Peter’s old pal Harry Osborn returns to New York with a terminal illness and a desperate need for Spider-Man’s blood. It all leads to a triple-threat showdown that forces Peter to face his greatest tragedy yet. THE PROS The chemistry between Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone is epic status; they are arguably the best couple in any superhero franchise, and their banter feels quality and real. The web-swinging physics are a total win—the opening sequence is punchy and makes you feel the weight and speed of being Spidey better than almost any other movie. The visual effects on Electro’s powers are stunning, especially during the Times Square face-off. It’s a decent watch because Andrew Garfield is a winner in the suit, perfectly capturing the wisecracking, agile energy of the comics. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because the plot is a massive damp squib, trying to cram in way too many villains and setup for a "Sinister Six" cinematic universe that never happened. Paul Giamatti as Rhino is a bit of a joke and feels quality-deficient compared to the rest of the film. The pacing can feel slightly sluggish when it drags out the "mystery" of Peter’s parents, which honestly nobody asked for. Jamie Foxx’s Electro is a bit hit-or-miss—his transformation into a glowing blue man feels a bit cheesy for a 2014 flick. THE VERDICT A 7/10. Decent and highly recommended for the performances alone. It’s a winner for that final clock tower scene, which is one of the most emotional moments in comic book history. Go and watch it for the Spidey-quips—they’re pure quality. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Suit Upgrade: Andrew Garfield complained that the suit in the first movie was too restrictive and the eyes were too small. The sequel's suit was redesigned to look exactly like the classic Mark Bagley comic book art, with those massive white bug-eyes.• Deleted MJ: Shailene Woodley actually filmed several scenes as Mary Jane Watson. However, the director decided to cut her entirely to keep the focus on the Peter and Gwen relationship, as her presence felt like it was "crowding" the story.• Musical Madness: Hans Zimmer formed a "supergroup" called The Magnificent Six (including Pharrell Williams and Johnny Marr) to create the score. They used whispered voices in Electro’s theme to represent the voices inside his head. THE VIBE Like a bright neon billboard in a rainstorm. It smells like ozone, expensive New York perfume, and cotton candy.
