⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Brosnan’s second turn as 007 pits him against the 90s' true villain: a media mogul. Elliot Carver is a billionaire news tycoon looking to spark a war between the UK and China just to get exclusive broadcasting rights. Bond has to team up with Wai Lin, a lethal Chinese secret agent, to infiltrate Carver’s stealth ship and stop a global catastrophe. It is a high-octane, prophetic look at the power of fake news and information warfare, wrapped in a classic blockbuster shell. THE PROS The chemistry between Pierce Brosnan and Michelle Yeoh is a win; Yeoh doesn't just play a "Bond girl," she is a total belter who handles the fight choreography with more grace and grit than most leading men. The remote-control BMW chase in a Hamburg parking garage is a sincere highlight of the era—witty, inventive, and purely fun. Jonathan Pryce is clearly having a laugh as the villainous Carver, bringing a theatrical, tech-obsessed energy that makes him a memorable foil. It is a celebratory explosion of practical stunts, particularly the motorbike jump over a helicopter, which still looks incredible today. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because it follows the "Bond formula" so closely it occasionally feels a bit safe. The finale on the stealth ship is a decent action set-piece, but it can get a bit "shooty" and repetitive towards the end, losing some of the clever tension found in the first half. Teri Hatcher’s character is a bit wet and doesn't get much to do other than provide a brief emotional backstory for Bond. It misses the 9/10 status because, while it is a fantastic action flick, it doesn't quite have the groundbreaking impact of GoldenEye. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and a sincere recommendation for anyone who loves the "gadget-heavy" 90s era of Bond. It is a vault essential that has only become more relevant with age, considering its themes of media manipulation. Go and watch it for the incredible stunts and Michelle Yeoh’s spectacular performance—it’s the business when it comes to pure popcorn entertainment. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Car Troubles: The production used 15 different BMW 750iL cars for the filming. One was even modified so it could be driven from the back seat using a series of cameras and monitors, allowing Brosnan to "remote control" it from the floor of the car for the cameras.• Michelle Yeoh’s Prowess: Yeoh wanted to perform all her own stunts, but director Roger Spottiswoode had to stop her from doing some of the more dangerous ones because the insurance companies were terrified she’d get injured and shut down the production.• Real News: To make the "Carver Media Group" feel real, the production printed thousands of fake newspapers and even created a functional website for the fictional news outlet, which was quite a feat for the mid-90s. THE VIBE Like the hum of a server room and the flash of a camera bulb. It smells like fresh printer ink and expensive electronics. It makes you want to smash your telly, buy a motorbike, and never believe a headline you read on the internet ever again.
