⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY James Cameron returns to the producer’s chair for this 2019 entry, which bin-fires everything after T2 to act as a direct sequel. We find a grizzled Sarah Connor hunting Terminators across the US border when she crosses paths with an enhanced human soldier from the future and a young girl being hunted by the lethal Rev-9. It is a high-octane chase movie that tries to recapture the gritty, relentless energy of the original films while passing the torch to a new generation of metal-mashers. THE PROS The return of Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor is a absolute win; she brings a sincere, weary grit to the role that makes every other action hero look like they’re still in nappies. Mackenzie Davis is the business as Grace, the enhanced soldier—her fight choreography is brutal and carries a real sense of physical weight. The Rev-9 is a clever update on the T-1000, and the logic of it being able to split into two separate entities makes for some cracking action set-pieces. It is a celebratory explosion of practical stunts and high-end CGI that feels much more like a proper Terminator film than the previous few attempts. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because the opening scene is a total head-scratcher that will likely annoy anyone who was deeply invested in the ending of Judgment Day. While it is a decent belter, the plot is essentially a "greatest hits" remix of the first two movies—you’ve got the protector, the target, and the unstoppable killer in a series of vehicle chases. Arnold Schwarzenegger is great, but his "domesticated" T-800 subplot is a bit wet and might feel a tad too comical for those who prefer their killing machines to be, well, killing machines. It misses the 8/10 status because it feels a bit like a "safe" reboot rather than a bold new direction. THE VERDICT A 7/10. Not bad at all, and easily the best entry in the franchise since 1991. It is a respectable, hard-hitting action flick that treats its legacy characters with a fair bit of respect. Go and watch it if you have been waiting for a version of Sarah Connor that actually feels like a legend, but don't expect it to reinvent the wheel. It is a vault essential for fans of the series, even if it feels a bit like a "what could have been" project. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Hard Training: Linda Hamilton went through a sincere regime to get back into "Sarah Connor shape," which included training with Green Berets and a strict diet that she jokingly said made her look like she was made of leather.• Border Crossing: The massive motorway chase was actually filmed in Spain, which doubled for Mexico; the production had to shut down major roads for weeks to orchestrate the carnage involving the massive construction truck.• Digital De-aging: The controversial opening scene used high-end digital "face-swapping" to make the actors look exactly as they did in 1991, with the same stunt doubles being used to mimic their physical movements from the original sets. THE VIBE Like a hot desert road at midday, the smell of burning rubber and liquid metal, and the sound of a heavy shotgun blast. It is gritty, nostalgic, and incredibly fast-paced. It makes you want to buy a pair of aviators, a sturdy jeep, and never trust a smart-home device ever again.
