Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY If the first film was a locked-room mystery with machine guns, With a Vengeance is a massive, city-wide scavenger hunt from hell. We find a hungover and suspended John McClane being toyed with by a mysterious terrorist named "Simon," who forces him to sprint across New York City solving riddles or watch things go boom. Along for the ride is Zeus Carver, a shop owner who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It is a high-stakes, sweat-soaked race against time that turns the entire Big Apple into a lethal playground. THE PROS The chemistry between Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson is the absolute business; their witty back-and-forth and genuine friction make this one of the best buddy-cop dynamics ever put to film. Jeremy Irons is a absolute win as Simon, bringing a cold, calculating brilliance that makes him a worthy successor to the Gruber name. The pacing is a total belter, never letting up for a second as it moves from the frantic opening in Harlem to a massive subway heist. It manages to capture that gritty, 90s New York atmosphere perfectly, making the city itself feel like a character that is trying to kill you. THE CONS It earns a 9/10 because, let’s be honest, the final act on the boat and the border feels a bit bolted on compared to the brilliant riddle-solving of the first two hours. It is a bit of a shift in tone that doesn't quite match the intensity of the city chase. Also, some of the physics during the tunnel-flush scene are a bit wet and require a serious suspension of disbelief. It misses the 10/10 epic status only because the original is such a perfectly contained masterpiece, but this is a very close second. THE VERDICT A 9/10. This is an outstanding film and a genuine, masterfully crafted belter that sits firmly in the Must Watch category. It is a vault essential that proves you can take a character out of a building and still keep the tension at a breaking point. Go and watch this movie because we are telling you it is epic—it is the ultimate summer blockbuster that delivers brains, brawn, and one of the best villainous plots in history. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Trouble with the Law: The script was so detailed about how to rob the Federal Reserve that the writer was actually questioned by the FBI; they were concerned that he had found a genuine security flaw in the real-life vault system.• Alternate Ending: There is a much darker, low-key alternate ending where McClane tracks Simon down in Europe months later and forces him to play a game of "Rocket Box" with a rocket launcher—it is a sincere change of pace from the helicopter explosion we got.• Staying Hydrated: That famous "water jug" riddle at the fountain was actually quite difficult for the cast to work out on set, leading to a few frustrated takes before they got the logic right for the camera. THE VIBE Like a sweltering hot day in the city, the smell of hot asphalt and gunpowder, and the frantic ticking of a clock you cannot see. It is loud, smart, and incredibly tense. It makes you want to learn your five-gallon maths, buy a decent pair of boots, and never, ever answer a public payphone.
