👤 BIOGRAPHY

If you were to trace the meteoric rise of Paul Mescal, you’d find a career that has basically moved at warp speed. The bloke went from wearing a silver neck chain that launched a thousand internet memes to leading multi-million-pound Roman epics in the blink of an eye. With a rugged, everyday look, a nose that tells you he’s not afraid of a bit of rough-and-tumble, and an elite ability to look like he’s carrying the entire world's sadness on his shoulders, he has completely redefined what a modern leading man looks like.

He first properly took the world by storm during the 2020 lockdown, starring alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones in the BBC’s adaptation of Normal People. Playing the deeply conflicted Connell Waldron, Paul delivered a performance so raw and intensely human that it felt less like watching an actor and more like eavesdropping on someone’s private life. It didn't just earn him a BAFTA and an Emmy nod; it made him an overnight global phenomenon while everyone was stuck at home.

Rather than cashing in on his new heartthrob status with generic Hollywood rom-coms, Paul immediately doubled down on gritty, emotionally heavy indie projects. He earned a completely deserved Academy Award nomination for playing a young, struggling father in the beautiful indie drama Aftersun, went full psychological thriller mode in God's Creatures, and broke everyone's hearts opposite Andrew Scott in All of Us Strangers. He proved very early on that he has zero interest in playing the glossy superstar—he's only interested in the characters that have been properly chewed up by life.

Lately, he’s jumped right into the deepest end of blockbuster cinema, carrying Ridley Scott’s massive historic epic Gladiator II as Lucius, before jumping into Richard Linklater’s highly unique, twenty-year musical experiment Merrily We Roll Along. He’s also lined up to play the legendary Paul McCartney in Sam Mendes’ upcoming, highly anticipated multi-film project about The Beatles, and is starring in the intense romantic thriller The History of Sound. Paul Mescal has proven that you can keep your feet firmly on the ground, avoid the typical Hollywood artificial fluff, and still completely conquer the industry by being brilliant at your job.

Insomniacs Trivia

• The Sausage Advert Origins: Before Normal People completely blew his career into the stratosphere, Paul’s very first professional appearance on a television screen was for a 2018 advert commercializing Denny Irish sausages. In the ad, a completely fresh-faced Paul eats a sausage, spins a globe, and gets inspired to travel to Bali, which became a running joke among his mates once he actually became a serious Hollywood star.

• The Mugging Cover-Up: Paul was an incredibly talented Gaelic football player in his youth, even captaining the Kildare minor team. He only fully threw himself into acting after suffering a brutal broken jaw during a match right before his final year at drama school. Terrified that the school would expel him for risking his face in a rough contact sport, he actually lied to his tutors, spinning a wild yarn that he had been randomly mugged at his part-time job instead.

• The Brando Blessing: When Paul took on the iconic, brutally intense role of Stanley Kowalski in a West End revival of A Streetcar Named Desire, he wasn't just chasing a paycheck. His performance was so fiercely animalistic and powerful that it earned him a prestigious Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor, with critics openly comparing his raw stage presence to a young Marlon Brando.

Insomniacs Take

Paul Mescal is the real deal. In a business that is completely flooded with heavily manufactured, media-trained young stars who look like they’ve been generated by a computer, he brings an old-school, working-class grit to the screen that you simply cannot fake. He has completely mastered the art of quiet, physical acting—conveying more emotion with a single, exhausted glance than most actors can manage with a ten-minute monologue. The bloke is an absolute titan in the making, and cinema is in very safe hands with him leading the charge.
