⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Twenty years after a final summer holiday at a fading Turkish resort, Sophie reflects on the rare time she spent with her loving but troubled father, Calum (Paul Mescal). As she sifts through home movie footage and hazy memories, she tries to reconcile the man she knew with the man she didn't—a father struggling with the crushing weight of life outside of their shared moments. It’s a quiet, devastatingly honest look at the fragments we keep of the people we love and the realization that our parents are complex, hurting humans long before we are old enough to see it. THE PROS This is one of the most powerful directorial debuts in years. Charlotte Wells captures the specific, sun-drenched boredom of a 90s holiday with pinpoint accuracy, making the film feel like a personal memory rather than a script. It hits a 9 because the performances are flawless; Paul Mescal is incredible, showing Calum’s internal collapse through small, pained gestures while trying to remain a hero for his daughter. Frankie Corio is a natural as young Sophie, avoiding all the usual child-actor clichés. It’s an honest, gritty portrayal of mental health that doesn't need big dramatic speeches to break your heart.
