If you’ve watched any major film or television series over the last thirty years, you’ve almost certainly seen Tony Curran completely control a scene. He is one of Scotland’s finest exports—a powerhouse character actor who brings an intense, screen-chewing energy to absolutely everything he touches. With a glance that can switch from deeply heartbreaking to utterly terrifying in a split second, Tony is the definition of a dependable actor who makes every single project significantly better just by turning up.
For a generation of sci-fi fans, he earned permanent legendary status with one specific, deeply emotional role. He stepped into the shoes of Vincent van Gogh in the classic Doctor Who episode Vincent and the Doctor. His performance was so raw, moving, and beautifully handled that it routinely tops lists as one of the greatest episodes in the entire history of the show. He managed to portray the legendary painter's inner struggles with so much honesty that it still brings viewers to tears.
But limiting him to just one famous guest slot is doing his massive career a huge disservice. Tony has popped up in massive Hollywood blockbusters like Gladiator, Blade II, and Underworld: Evolution, usually playing the kind of gritty, hard-hitting blokes you really wouldn't want to cross in a dark alley. He’s also been a massive fixture on premium television, putting in incredible shifts in Sons of Anarchy, Ray Donovan, and the brilliant, heartbreaking BBC drama Mayflies.
Lately, his career has hit an absolute peak. He completely stole the show in the historical drama Mary & George, playing a wildly chaotic, wine-swilling King James I with absolute perfection. He’s also jumped straight into the massive Outlander universe, playing the fierce Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat in the prequel series Outlander: Blood of My Blood, and has lined up a lead role in the intense crime series Dept. Q. The man is working at an absolute elite level, and he shows zero signs of slowing down.
• The Red Rose Connection: Tony has a brilliant connection to the North West of England through the hit BBC horror thriller series Red Rose. The entire show was filmed and set right on our doorstep in Bolton, Lancashire, and Tony put in a wonderfully creepy, standout performance as the mysterious Jacob Taylor, proving he can do gritty British horror just as well as massive Hollywood epics.
• The Red Card Fanatic: Away from the camera, Tony is an absolute, die-hard football fanatic. He is a massive, lifelong supporter of Celtic FC and can regularly be found shouting his lungs out for his team, even when he’s living over in Los Angeles. He frequently plays in high-profile celebrity charity matches alongside fellow Scottish actors to raise money for good causes.
• The Red Haired King: When Tony was cast as King James I in Mary & George, he didn't just turn up and read the script. He did months of deep historical research and discovered that the real king actually had reddish hair, just like his own. He used this to fully inhabit the role, bringing a level of historical accuracy and chaotic energy that completely blew the critics away.
Tony Curran is a proper legend who deserves every single bit of his success. In an industry full of people who only know how to play versions of themselves, he completely disappears into his roles with zero fuss. Whether he is playing a legendary historical king, a tortured iconic painter, or a gritty gangster in a crime drama, he brings a level of raw honesty and power that you simply cannot fake. He is an absolute credit to the screen, and we will watch anything he is involved in.
