Overview

In 1992, Mercer is desperately trying to rebuild his life and his relationship with his son amidst the turbulent Los Angeles uprising following the Rodney King verdict. Across town, another father and son put their own strained relationship to the test as they plot a dangerous heist to steal catalytic converters, which contain valuable platinum from the factory where Mercer works. As tensions rise and chaos erupts, both families reach their boiling points when their worlds collide.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Set against the backdrop of the explosive 1992 L.A. uprising, Mercer (Tyrese Gibson) is a pained ex-con trying to rebuild his life and shield his son from the chaos following the Rodney King verdict. Meanwhile, across town, Lowell (Ray Liotta) and his son Riggin (Scott Eastwood) see the city’s burning streets as the perfect cover for a massive heist at the factory where Mercer works. When the two father-son duos collide in the middle of a powder keg, it sparks a gritty, visceral confrontation where survival depends on a pained, shaky trust between kin. THE PROS This is an honest, punchy thriller that benefits from a fair shout of historical gravity. It hits a 7 because Tyrese Gibson delivers one of his most sincere performances to date, capturing the pained desperation of a father trying to go straight in a world that’s literally on fire. The late Ray Liotta is an absolute highlight in his final role, bringing an epic, psychotic edge that only he could provide. The tension is maintained with a gritty realism, and the heist sequences feel visceral and heavy against the real-world chaos of the riots. It’s an honest look at the pained bonds between fathers and sons, packaged in a slick, seat-gripping action flick that moves at a decent clip. THE CONS It stays at a 7 because the plot can feel like a bit of a head-scratcher when it tries to balance the weight of the L.A. riots with the more generic "Die Hard in a factory" heist tropes. It misses a higher mark because some of the dialogue feels a bit clunky, and the supporting cast doesn't get enough pained depth to make their motivations feel truly unique. The ending is an honest attempt at a big payoff but feels a touch predictable for those who have seen their fair share of pained crime thrillers.
