Overview

When cops Schmidt and Jenko join the secret Jump Street unit, they use their youthful appearances to go undercover as high school students. They trade in their guns and badges for backpacks, and set out to shut down a dangerous drug ring. But, as time goes on, Schmidt and Jenko discover that high school is nothing like it was just a few years earlier -- and, what's more, they must again confront the teenage terror and anxiety they thought they had left behind.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Schmidt (Jon Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) were high school polar opposites—one a nerdy overachiever, the other a popular jock. Years later, they’re partners in the police force who are both equally rubbish at their jobs. To salvage their careers, they’re sent to a revived undercover unit at 21 Jump Street, where they have to pose as students to sniff out a lethal new synthetic drug. The twist? High school has changed, the social hierarchies are flipped, and the two have to face their teenage demons while trying to bust a dealer. THE PROS This shouldn't have worked as well as it did. It takes a dated 80s drama and turns it into a self-aware, high-energy comedy that mocks the very idea of a reboot. The chemistry between Hill and Tatum is top-tier; Tatum in particular is a revelation, showing off some serious comedic chops that nobody saw coming. It hits an 8 because the script is genuinely funny, trading easy gags for smart, satirical observations about how youth culture has shifted. The action sequences are surprisingly well-handled, and the cameos are a brilliant nod to the original source material. It’s an honest, loud, and chaotic win for the buddy-cop genre. THE CONS It misses a higher score because it occasionally leans a bit too hard into some of the more crude, low-brow humor that was typical of early 2010s comedies. It stays at an 8 because the plot is a bit predictable—you can see the "third-act fallout" between the partners coming from a mile away. Some of the supporting high school characters feel like one-dimensional stereotypes, even when the movie is trying to subvert them. It’s a bit of a marathon of dick jokes and explosions, so if you aren't in the mood for something that’s intentionally "extra," the energy might feel a bit exhausting by the end. THE VERDICT 8/10. A sharp, gritty, and hilarious reboot that actually justifies its existence. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Jonah Hill actually lost a significant amount of weight before filming to fit the "nerdy student" look, but the production schedule was so tight he ended up having to wear baggy clothes to maintain the silhouette. • Channing Tatum was initially hesitant to do the movie because he didn't think he was funny enough, only agreeing after Jonah Hill personally convinced him and helped shape the role to fit his physical comedy style. • The film features a massive cameo from Johnny Depp and Peter DeLuise, reprising their roles from the original TV show, which was kept entirely secret from the public until the film’s release. THE VIBE Like a spilled energy drink on a gym floor. It smells of cheap body spray, cafeteria pizza, and the metallic tang of a locker door.
