Overview

After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt and Jenko when they go deep undercover at a local college. But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team, and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership. Now they don't have to just crack the case - they have to figure out if they can have a mature relationship. If these two overgrown adolescents can grow from freshmen into real men, college might be the best thing that ever happened to them.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY After surviving high school (twice), Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) are heading to local college to go undercover and find the supplier of a new drug called "WHY-PHY." The setup is exactly the same, and the movie knows it. While Jenko finds his soulmate in a frat-bro football player, Schmidt gets sidelined and starts questioning their partnership. It’s a loud, self-referential sequel that mocks its own bigger budget while delivering more explosions, more awkward undercover moments, and a lot of meta-commentary on why sequels usually fail. THE PROS The chemistry between Hill and Tatum is even better here. They lean into the "marriage" dynamic of their partnership, making the emotional fallout of their "breakup" legitimately funny. It hits an 8 because it’s one of the few sequels that is actually as funny as the first, mostly because it leans so hard into the joke that it’s just repeating the first movie. The addition of Ice Cube as a more prominent, angry Captain Dickson is a masterstroke—his scenes are some of the best in the film. It’s an honest, high-energy comedy that manages to balance the slapstick with some genuinely clever satire about college life and movie franchises. THE CONS Because it’s so focused on being a "repeat," some of the gags can feel a little too familiar if you’ve just watched the first one. It stays at an 8 because the runtime feels a bit stretched toward the end, and the "investigation" plot is even thinner than it was in the first movie. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • The "expensive" car chase at the beginning of the movie was a direct joke about the film’s massive budget increase, with the directors deliberately blowing things up just because they could. • During the scene where Jenko and his new friend Zook (Wyatt Russell) bond over "Q-tip"ing, much of the dialogue was improvised by Tatum and Russell, who became genuine friends on set. • The fictional "Metropolitan State University" was actually filmed on the campuses of Tulane and Loyola University in New Orleans, though the film is set in the same fictional city as the first. THE VIBE Like a frat party that’s gone on way too long. It smells of cheap beer, sunscreen, and the metallic tang of a red solo cup.
