Overview

A covert military task force tracks a mysterious energy disturbance at a secret base in New Mexico that is suspected of experimenting on alien technology.     ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 2/10 THE SUMMARY Chuck Norris makes a return to the screen, but even a Texas Ranger can’t save this bargain-bin sci-fi slog. The plot follows a secret government task force, led by Alastair (Norris), that investigates a mysterious energy disturbance in New Mexico. They suspect alien technology is being tested, so they send in a rookie agent with "enhanced" abilities to join a team of hardened marines. What follows is a trek through some very familiar-looking woods while they get picked off by masked "super-soldiers." It’s a low-budget actioner that tries to play in the big leagues but feels more like a backyard fan film with a few famous faces. THE PROS The only real winner here is the nostalgia of seeing Chuck Norris back in action; at over 80 years old, he still carries himself with that legendary presence, even if he’s mostly relegated to a command center. Marc Singer (of *Beastmaster* fame) also turns up, giving a sincere performance that feels a bit too good for the surrounding material. It earns a 2/10 because there are a couple of practical fight scenes in the first part that show a bit of effort, and the stunt team clearly worked hard to make the most of a quality-deficient budget. If you’re a die-hard B-movie completist, there’s a certain honest, campy charm to how seriously it takes itself. THE CONS It lands a 2/10 because the script is an absolute clanger, filled with sci-fi techno-babble that is a total head-scratcher and serves no real purpose. The middle part is incredibly sluggish, consisting mostly of people in tactical gear walking through the forest and whispering into radios to pad out the runtime. The "alien" threats and special effects are quality-deficient, looking more like something from an early 2000s PC game than a 2024 production. It misses a higher mark because the action is poorly edited and the "superpowers" are never properly explained or utilized in a way that feels gripping. It’s a bit of a disaster that relies entirely on name recognition rather than actual storytelling or craft. THE VERDICT A 2/10. A quality-deficient sci-fi mess that even Chuck Norris fans will struggle to finish. It’s a sincere attempt at an indie blockbuster that ends up being a winner only for those who enjoy ironic "so bad it's good" cinema. While it’s honest in its effort, it’s a far cry from a banger and nowhere near "epic status." Avoid this one unless you really need to see Chuck Norris give one last roundhouse kick to a generic masked henchman. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Family Affair: The film was written and directed by Derek Ting, who also stars as the lead rookie agent, making this a massive passion project that he spent years trying to get off the ground. • Chuck’s Return: This marks Chuck Norris’s first film role in over a decade, following his appearance in *The Expendables 2* back in 2012. • Location Scouting: Despite being set in New Mexico, much of the filming took place in Southern California, utilizing the same forest locations that have been a staple of low-budget sci-fi for decades. THE VIBE Like a dusty VHS tape found in a clearance bin. It smells of stale popcorn, cheap camouflage fabric, and the metallic tang of a prop gun.
