⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Scott Lang is under house arrest after his airport scrap in Germany, spending his days playing indoor drums and learning close-up magic. With just days left on his sentence, he’s "ant-napped" by Hope van Dyne and Hank Pym, who are now fugitives. They need Scott’s brain—specifically a message he received from the Quantum Realm—to find the long-lost Janet van Dyne. While they try to stabilize a quantum tunnel, they’re hunted by Ghost, a phase-shifting assassin with a tragic backstory, and a black-market tech dealer named Sonny Burch. It all leads to a massive, shrinking car chase through the streets of San Francisco. THE PROS The action is quality and creatively uses the shrinking tech; the Pez dispenser scene and the kitchen fight with the salt shaker are epic status. Evangeline Lilly finally gets her wings as The Wasp, and she is a total win, arguably being a better fighter than Scott. Michael Peña as Luis is a winner every time he opens his mouth—the "truth serum" monologue is pure quality comedy. It’s a 7/10 because it’s a breezy, punchy palate cleanser that doesn't feel the need to be world-ending. The addition of Michelle Pfeiffer and Laurence Fishburne adds some serious gravitas to the cast. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because the stakes feel a bit small compared to other MCU flicks, making the middle section feel slightly sluggish. Ghost is a decent villain but her motivation is a bit of a damp squib, and she’s overshadowed by the comedy. It misses an 8/10 mark because it feels a bit quality-deficient in its pacing, sometimes feeling more like a bridge to 'Endgame' than its own movie. Sonny Burch is a winner for Walton Goggins' performance, but the character doesn't really go anywhere. THE VERDICT A 7/10. Decent and highly recommended if you want a superhero movie that’s actually funny. It’s a winner for the shrinking gags and the post-credits scene—which is quality but absolutely devastating. Go and watch it for the "Giant Ant" playing the drums—it’s pure gold. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Magic Man: Paul Rudd actually learned the close-up card magic seen in the movie. He spent weeks practicing the "Great Scott" routine to ensure he could do it for real on camera without needing jump cuts or CGI.• Micro Details: Hank Pym’s portable lab is a masterpiece of "found item" design. If you look closely at the interior, the railings are made from paperclips, the light bulbs are actual Christmas lights, and the structural supports are built from LEGO bricks and Erector sets.• Digital Dining: During the scenes where they’re tracking the lab or looking at the Quantum Tunnel data, the scrolling code on the monitors features the legendary "sushi recipe" easter egg—the favorite recurring joke of the VFX teams that has survived for over twenty-five years of Marvel movies. THE VIBE Like a ride in a toy car. It smells like popcorn, San Francisco sea air, and fresh playing cards.
