Overview

Marty and Doc are at it again as the time-traveling duo head to 2015 to nip some McFly family woes in the bud. But things go awry thanks to bully Biff Tannen and a pesky sports almanac.     ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Picking up seconds after the first film, Doc Brown whisks Marty and Jennifer away to the year 2015 to prevent Marty's future son from making a life-altering mistake. While navigating a world of hoverboards and flying cars, an elderly Biff Tannen steals the DeLorean and travels back to 1955 to give his younger self a sports almanac containing fifty years of scores. This creates a "hell-hole" alternate 1985 where Biff is a billionaire tyrant married to Marty’s mother. Marty and Doc have to head back to 1955 to steal the almanac back right under their own noses, weaving through the events of the first movie without causing a paradox that deletes them from existence. THE PROS The sheer ambition of the script is a winner; weaving the 1985 characters back into the scenes of the 1955 original is genius and pure quality cinema. Michael J. Fox is punchy as ever, playing multiple versions of the McFly family, while Thomas F. Wilson puts in a powerhouse performance as several generations of Biff. The 2015 sequence is epic status—it gave us the hoverboard, the self-lacing Nikes, and a vision of the future that is still more fun than the real one. It’s a 7/10 because the plotting is incredibly clever, turning time travel into a high-stakes puzzle that rewards you for paying attention. The "Hell Valley" sequence is a winner for its dark atmosphere, showing a much grittier side to the franchise. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because it lacks the sincere "heart" and simple charm of the original; it feels more like a complex board game than a character-driven story. The pacing can feel slightly sluggish during the technical explanations of alternate timelines, and the "chicken" subplot for Marty feels a bit forced and repetitive. It misses an 8/10 mark because the ending is a total cliffhanger—literally a commercial for Part III—which can feel like a bit of a damp squib if you’re looking for a self-contained experience. Some of the prosthetic makeup used to age the actors in the 2015 scenes looks a bit quality-deficient and rubbery by modern standards. THE VERDICT A 7/10.
