Overview

Marcus Burnett is a henpecked family man. Mike Lowrey is a footloose and fancy free ladies' man. Both Miami policemen, they have 72 hours to reclaim a consignment of drugs stolen from under their station's nose. To complicate matters, in order to get the assistance of the sole witness to a murder, they have to pretend to be each other.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Marcus Burnett is a family man with a mortgage, and Mike Lowrey is a trust-fund playboy with a Porsche. They’re partners in the Miami PD, and they’ve just lost $100 million worth of seized heroin from their own vault. They have five days to find the gear before Internal Affairs shuts them down. To get a lead, they have to protect a witness to a murder, but there’s a catch: she only trusts one of them, forcing the duo to swap identities and live each other’s lives while hunting down a French drug kingpin. THE PROS The chemistry is a win. This is where the legend started, and the back-and-forth between Will Smith and Martin Lawrence is punchy and feels genuine. Michael Bay’s directorial debut is epic; he turned a relatively low budget into something that looks like a massive blockbuster. The Porsche vs. Shelby Cobra chase at the end is a winner. It’s a good movie because it successfully mashed the "odd couple" comedy with serious action, setting the template for the next thirty years of cop flicks. THE CONS It misses the 9/10 mark because the plot is a bit thin and relies on the "identity swap" trope, which can feel a bit sluggish and forced in places. Some of the 90s fashion and tech have aged a bit awkwardly. The villain is a bit of a damp squib compared to the charismatic leads—he’s just a standard mean bloke with a French accent. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and a recommendation for anyone who likes their action with a side of bickering. It’s a winner that launched two massive careers and a huge franchise. Go and watch it for the "We be clubbin'" energy and the iconic slow-motion shots. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Improvised Legend: The "slow-motion" scene where Mike and Marcus stand up after the car explosion was a last-minute addition. Michael Bay didn't have enough money for another action scene, so he just filmed them looking "cool" to pad out the trailer.• Ad-Libbed Banter: Much of the dialogue, including the argument about the french fries and the "Blue Flame" club, was made up on the spot by Smith and Lawrence because they felt the original script wasn't funny enough.• Personal Touch: The black Porsche 911 Turbo driven by Mike Lowrey in the film actually belonged to the director, Michael Bay. He used his own car to save money on the production budget. THE VIBE Like a humid Miami night in a fast car. It smells like leather seats, French fries, and sea salt.
