⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY Nance Redfield (Lena Headey) is a mother working at a munitions factory in a small town. Her life is shattered when her son, Jesse, is killed in action overseas. While most parents are left with just a flag and a handshake, Nance discovers a horrifying coincidence: her son was killed by a bullet manufactured at her very own factory. This discovery sends her down a dark, conspiratorial rabbit hole of grief and rage. It’s an "anti-revenge" story that feels more like a slow-burn character study than the high-octane thriller the trailer might lead you to believe. THE PROS Lena Headey is the soul of this film. She delivers a raw, devastating performance that captures the frantic, ugly side of grief—the kind that makes you lash out at everyone around you. The film’s greatest strength is its willingness to tackle uncomfortable themes, like how extreme loss can fuel radicalization and bigotry. It’s a "Guaranteed Banger" for fans of grounded, grit-under-the-fingernails dramas. The cinematography makes the small-town setting feel appropriately claustrophobic and cold, perfectly matching Nance’s internal state. THE CONS It has a major identity crisis. It was marketed as a pulse-pounding revenge flick (the title is Ballistic, after all), but the actual movie is a 90-minute meditation on a mother’s mental breakdown. If you went in expecting John Wick with a factory worker, you’re going to be disappointed. The pacing feels like it’s circling the drain in the middle act, and a teaser at the start of the film accidentally spoils a major emotional beat later on. Also, Lena Headey and Amybeth McNulty (Anne with an E) developed such a close bond on set that their emotional scenes as mother-in-law and widow were often captured in just one or two takes to keep the raw intensity. Interestingly, this film premiered at the 2025 Cinéfest Sudbury before its wide release this month (April 2026). THE VIBE Like a cold, rusted piece of scrap metal. It’s heavy, uncomfortable to hold, and reminds you of something that used to be whole but is now just a sharp, jagged remnant.
