⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Tim Burton’s breakout masterpiece is a high-quality blend of the macabre and the hilarious. When Adam and Barbara Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) die in a freak accident, they find themselves trapped as ghosts in their own home. When a pretentious New York family moves in and ruins the place, the Maitlands try to scare them off—but they’re just too nice. In desperation, they summon Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), a "bio-exorcist" who is legendary, chaotic, and dangerous. It’s a wildly original ride through the afterlife that turned the horror-comedy genre on its head. THE PROS This earns its 9/10 and "Epic Status" because Michael Keaton is a total winner. Even though he’s only on screen for about 15 minutes, his performance is legendary, loud, and completely sincere in its madness. The practical effects and stop-motion animation are absolute quality, giving the afterlife a hand-crafted, high-quality grit that CGI simply can't touch. Winona Ryder is a total win as the goth icon Lydia Deetz, providing a grounded and honest heart to all the supernatural banter. It hits the 9/10 mark because the "Day-O" dinner party sequence is a total banger—one of the most high-quality and funny moments in cinema history. It’s a legendary shout for anyone who loves a movie that is weird, bold, and visually unparalleled. THE CONS It misses the perfect 10/10 mark because some of the pacing in the middle is a bit of a slow-roller as the Maitlands learn the "rules" of being dead. While the visuals are high-quality, a few of the blue-screen effects have aged a bit, making some moments feel slightly quality-deficient compared to the rest of the stunning practical work. It lands a 9 because it is almost perfect, but the final act wraps up a touch too quickly for such a legendary buildup. THE VERDICT A 9/10.
