⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Axel Foley is a fast-talking Detroit cop who heads to the posh streets of Beverly Hills to find the man who murdered his best friend. Axel is a fish out of water in the land of palm trees and polo shirts, and he quickly ruffles the feathers of the local police department. Despite being told to stay out of the investigation, he teams up with two local detectives, Rosewood and Taggart, to take down a wealthy drug smuggler hiding behind an art gallery front. THE PROS This movie is a win because it perfectly balances action and comedy. Eddie Murphy is in his absolute prime; his energy is punchy, and his ability to talk his way into—and out of—trouble is legendary. The chemistry between Axel and the stiff Beverly Hills cops is epic and leads to some of the funniest moments in 80s cinema. The "Axel F" theme song is a total earworm that sets the tone perfectly. It’s a 9/10 because it redefined the buddy-cop genre and remains endlessly rewatchable. THE CONS The plot itself is a bit straightforward and follows the typical 80s "renegade cop" formula. It misses the 10/10 mark because some of the pacing in the middle drags slightly when Axel isn't on screen. A few of the secondary villains are a bit of a damp squib compared to the charismatic leads. THE VERDICT A 9/10. Epic status and highly recommended. It’s the definitive Eddie Murphy movie and a vault essential. Go and watch it for the banana in the tailpipe scene—it’s a classic for a reason. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Casting Shuffle: Sylvester Stallone was originally cast as Axel Foley. He wanted to turn it into a gritty, ultra-violent action movie, but he left the project just weeks before filming. Much of his script ideas were later used for the movie 'Cobra'.• Improvisation: The scene where Axel, Rosewood, and Taggart are laughing in the car about the "supercop" story was entirely improvised. The actors were actually laughing because they couldn't keep a straight face during Eddie Murphy's ad-libs.• Real Police: Many of the background extras in the police station scenes were actual off-duty Beverly Hills police officers who were hired to ensure the procedures looked somewhat authentic. THE VIBE Like a leather jacket in a room full of suits. It smells like bubblegum, expensive cologne, and exhaust fumes.
