⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Dean (Ryan Gosling) and Cindy (Michelle Williams) are a married couple whose relationship is in its final, agonizing death throes. The film cuts between two timelines: the electric, hopeful beginning of their whirlwind romance and the bleak, claustrophobic reality of their present-day marriage. As they check into a tacky themed hotel room in a desperate attempt to save what’s left, the contrast between who they were and who they’ve become paints a devastating picture of how love can erode over time. THE PROS This is about as raw as cinema gets. The chemistry between Gosling and Williams is staggering; they spent weeks living together in a house to build the history and friction you see on screen. It hits a 9 because it feels more like a documentary than a movie—the arguments are messy, the silences are heavy, and the intimacy feels uncomfortably real. Ryan Gosling is brilliant as the man who peaked early, while Michelle Williams delivers a pained, honest performance as a woman who has simply outgrown her life.
