⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY It’s 1995, and Vers is a Kree elite soldier with amnesia and light-blasting hands who crash-lands into a Blockbuster Video. While hunting down shape-shifting Skrulls on Earth, she teams up with a young, two-eyed Nick Fury and a ginger cat named Goose. As she recovers her memories of being U.S. Air Force pilot Carol Danvers, she realizes the Kree-Skrull war isn't quite what she was told. Carol has to unlock her full potential to protect a group of refugees and stop her former mentor, Yon-Rogg, from weaponizing the Tesseract. THE PROS Samuel L. Jackson is a total win; the de-aging tech is epic status and makes him look exactly like he did in the 90s without feeling weird. The chemistry between Fury and Carol is quality, bringing a buddy-cop energy that keeps the movie moving. Ben Mendelsohn is a winner as Talos, delivering a performance that’s both hilarious and surprisingly sincere. It’s a 7/10 because it’s a punchy, nostalgic ride with a great 90s soundtrack. Goose the "cat" steals every scene he’s in—it’s pure quality. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because the "amnesia" plot can feel a bit sluggish and holds Carol back from having a real personality until the final act. The villain, Yon-Rogg, is a bit of a damp squib once the twist is revealed, lacking the punchy threat level of other MCU big bads. It misses an 8/10 mark because some of the CGI during the final space battle looks a bit quality-deficient and rubbery. Also, the explanation for how Fury lost his eye felt like a bit of a head-scra—well, let's just say it was a bit of a letdown for such a legendary mystery. THE VERDICT A 7/10. Decent and a solid way to spend two hours. It’s a winner for the 90s vibes and the introduction of the Skrulls. Go and watch it for the Stan Lee tribute—it’s quality and very touching. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Feline Friction: Even though Goose is a total win on screen, Brie Larson is actually severely allergic to cats. Most of her scenes with the "feline" were filmed using a realistic puppet or a CGI double to stop her from sneezing through her takes.• Windows 98 Woes: In the scene where Carol is waiting for a file to load on a computer, the interface looks like Windows 98. However, the movie is set in 1995, meaning she was somehow using an operating system that wouldn't be released for another three years.• Digital Dining: In the scenes featuring the high-tech Kree monitors and the Skrull ship displays, the scrolling "alien" code once again contains the legendary hidden sushi recipe—the favorite recurring easter egg of the VFX crew since the original 'X-Men'. THE VIBE Like a flannel shirt and a scratched CD. It smells like old video rental cases, jet fuel, and Nine Inch Nails posters.
