Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Welcome to the "Cidade de Deus," a favela in Rio de Janeiro where the sun is hot, the music is loud, and the life expectancy is roughly twenty minutes. Spanning from the 1960s to the 80s, we follow Rocket, a kid who just wants to take photos and stay alive, while his childhood peers turn the neighborhood into a war zone. At the center of the chaos is Li'l Zé, a pint-sized psychopath who decides to become the drug kingpin by killing literally everyone else. It’s a sprawling, bloody epic about how where you’re born dictates how you die. THE PROS The energy is infectious. It’s filmed with a frantic, MTV-style kineticism that makes you feel like you’re dodging bullets alongside the characters. Most of the cast were actual residents of the favelas with zero acting experience, which gives the movie a raw, terrifying authenticity you just can't fake. Li'l Zé is one of the most effective villains in cinema history—he’s not a "mastermind," he’s just a kid with a gun and zero empathy. It manages to be heartbreaking, stylish, and thrilling all at the same time without ever feeling like it’s "exploiting" the poverty it depicts. THE CONS It is a sensory assault. If you don't like fast cuts, loud noises, and subtitles, this will be a struggle. The violence against children is particularly brutal and might be a dealbreaker for some; it’s realistic to the point of being nauseating. Because it covers so much time and so many characters (The Runaway, The Tender Trio, The Knockout), it can be a bit hard to keep track of who is shooting whom and why during the middle act. THE VERDICT A "Guaranteed Banger" that frequently tops "Best Movie Ever" lists for a reason. It’s Goodfellas on steroids and a 9/10 that hits you like a freight train. It’s a masterpiece of world-building that makes a Brazilian slum feel like the center of the universe. If you haven't seen it, stop what you're doing and fix that. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA To keep the performances real, the director didn't show the "police" actors to the "gang" actors until the moment they filmed the big shootout—the genuine fear and confusion on their faces is 100% authentic. Also, the scene where a chicken escapes and leads the gang on a chase (which opens the film) took two days to film because, surprisingly, chickens don't take direction well. Most impressively, many of the child actors used the money they earned to actually move out of the favelas and start careers in the arts. THE VIBE Like a Samba beat played on a machine gun. It’s colorful, rhythmic, and incredibly dangerous. One of the few movies that will make you sweat just by watching it.
