Prosecutor Leopold Bilski is reassigned to a seemingly peaceful, sleepy town in Kashubia, only for the sudden disappearance of a young boy to shatter the quiet facade. As Bilski digs into the case, the discovery of another child’s body forces him to untangle a horrific web of local legends, historical cover-ups, and disturbing secrets tightly guarded by the tight-lipped townspeople. THE PROSJakub Gierszał is brilliant once again as the obsessive, brooding prosecutor, carrying the film with a heavy, wearisome intensity that perfectly grounds the mystery. The movie looks stunning in a bleak, cold sort of way, utilizing the atmospheric, misty Polish wilderness to amp up the isolation and dread. It handles the procedural element with a solid, slow-burning rhythm that will thoroughly satisfy fans of European noir who enjoy a meticulous, step-by-step investigation over cheap, fast-paced action.
