⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Matt Murdock is a blind defense attorney in Hell's Kitchen who lost his sight as a boy in a freak accident with toxic waste. The same spill enhanced his other four senses to superhuman levels, giving him a "radar sense." By day, he fights for the innocent in the courtroom; by night, he dons a red leather suit to take down the criminals the law can't touch. His worlds collide when he falls for Elektra Natchios, while a ruthless crime lord named Kingpin hires a psychotic, never-miss assassin called Bullseye to eliminate him. THE PROS The Director’s Cut is a win; it adds a gritty legal subplot involving a character played by Coolio that actually makes Matt look like a lawyer for once. Michael Clarke Duncan is epic status as the Kingpin—he’s a massive, menacing presence that genuinely feels like he could crush a man's skull. Colin Farrell as Bullseye is a punchy highlight, leaning into the campy madness of the character with a quality performance. It’s a decent watch because it captures the dark, rain-slicked atmosphere of the early 2000s Marvel era perfectly. The "Shadow World" radar effects are a winner and still look quite unique today. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because the theatrical version is a bit of a damp squib, feeling choppy and over-focused on the romance rather than the plot. The playground fight between Matt and Elektra is slightly sluggish and arguably one of the cringiest scenes in superhero history. It misses an 8/10 mark because the CGI "digital doubles" used for the acrobatic jumps are glaringly obvious and haven't aged well. The leather suit, while iconic, looks a bit quality-deficient and restrictive during the big action sequences. THE VERDICT A 7/10. Decent and highly recommended if you stick to the Director's Cut. It’s a winner for the moody 2000s soundtrack and Michael Clarke Duncan’s performance. Go and watch it to see the origin of the modern Marvel gritty tone—it’s quality nostalgia. During production, he began his first discussions with Marvel about a character called Iron Man, a conversation that would eventually launch the entire MCU.• Bullseye's Ink: In the pub scene, look closely at Colin Farrell’s neck—it’s peeling. This isn't a character choice; the actor had a severe sunburn, but the production didn't have time to wait for it to heal, so they just filmed around it. THE VIBE Like a rainy night in a gothic city. It smells like wet leather, expensive cigars, and Evanescence lyrics.
