⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Gru has traded freeze rays for fatherhood and a questionable jelly-making business. That changes when the Anti-Villain League kidnaps him (and a couple of Minions) to help track down a mystery baddie who stole a serum that turns things into purple killing machines. Gru goes undercover at the local mall with agent Lucy Wilde, trying to sniff out a villain while dealing with Margo’s first crush and a suspiciously buff restaurant owner named Eduardo. THE PROS Lucy Wilde is a total belter. Her chaotic energy perfectly offsets Gru’s grumpiness. The purple Minions are a win—they’re basically the original Minions after a massive bender and they actually feel like a threat. It’s an 8/10 because the comedy hits a higher gear than the sequels. The El Macho reveal is epic and the final battle at the suburban fortress is punchy. It’s a good movie because it keeps the focus on the family dynamic without losing the slapstick madness. THE CONS The "jelly business" subplot is a head-scratcher and drags a bit in the middle. It misses the 9/10 mark because it loses that darker edge the first film had. The romance is fine, but it makes the pacing feel sluggish when we just want to see more gadget-filled heists. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and highly recommended for a laugh. It’s a belter for the Pharrell soundtrack alone. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Al Pacino was originally cast as El Macho and even recorded all his lines, but he left the project over "creative differences" shortly before release.• When Gru is typing his password for the secret lab, he punches in "007," a nod to James Bond.• The scene where a Minion gets kidnapped on a beach was a parody of the classic 1953 film 'From Here to Eternity.' THE VIBE Like a sugar rush in a secret underground lab. It smells like strawberry jelly and lipstick tasers.
