⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 4/10 THE SUMMARY Two lovable idiots, Jesse (Ashton Kutcher) and Chester (Seann William Scott), wake up after a night of legendary partying with zero memory and a missing Renault Le Car. Their quest to find their vehicle involves "continuum transfunctioners," a cult of space-suit enthusiasts, a group of gorgeous aliens, and a very angry ostrich. It’s the cinematic equivalent of a gas station burrito: you know it’s bad for you, you’ll probably regret it later, but in the heat of the moment, it hits a very specific, low-brow spot. THE PROS It’s unapologetically stupid. In an era where comedies were trying to be "meaningful," this one just wanted to see how many times it could say "Dude" and "Sweet." The "Chinese Food Drive-Thru" scene ("And then?") is a genuine Hall of Fame comedy bit that still works today. Kutcher and Scott have great "empty-headed" chemistry, making you actually believe they possess a combined IQ of about 12. It’s colorful, fast-paced, and doesn't ask a single thing of your brain cells. THE CONS The "humor" is very much stuck in the year 2000. A lot of the jokes are dated, repetitive, or just plain lazy. It’s essentially a series of loosely connected sketches held together by the thin thread of a missing car. If you aren't in the exact right mood (read: tired or slightly "elevated"), the constant "Dude!"-ing becomes grating within twenty minutes. It’s a movie that relies entirely on nostalgia and a high tolerance for slapstick nonsense. THE VERDICT It’s not a "Guaranteed Banger" by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s a "Stoner Classic." It gets a 4/10 because it’s objectively thin and fairly dumb, but it’s a fun kind of dumb. It’s the perfect movie to watch when you’ve had a long week and want to feel smarter than the people on your screen. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA The word "Dude" is spoken 85 times in the movie, while "Sweet" is uttered 59 times. Also, the "Zoltan" hand gesture (the 'Z' made with the hands) actually became a weirdly popular meme in the sports world, notably adopted by the Pittsburgh Pirates years after the movie came out. Most surprisingly, the "And Then?" lady was voiced by Jodi Chao, who actually had to record that line hundreds of times to get the perfect level of "annoying" for the director. THE VIBE Like a neon-colored slushie that gives you an immediate brain freeze. It’s sugary, artificial, and leaves your tongue blue, but you’ll probably finish the whole thing anyway.
