⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY In a world where high-tech virtual reality is played through fleshy, organic pods that plug directly into "bio-ports" in your spine, game designer Allegra Geller is the ultimate superstar. During a test screening of her new game, *eXistenZ*, a "Realist" assassin tries to take her out. Allegra goes on the run with a timid security guard, Ted Pikul, and to save her damaged game pod, she convinces him to get a bio-port so they can jump into the game together. As they descend through layers of virtual reality, the line between what’s the game and what’s real starts to rot away. THE PROS David Cronenberg is at his body-horror peak here, trading cold metal for "New Flesh" technology. The organic game pods—which look like pulsing, rubbery kidneys—are an epic piece of design. Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jude Law have a punchy, awkward chemistry that perfectly suits the "uncanny valley" vibe of the game world. It’s a good movie because it explores the philosophy of reality far more viscerally than *The Matrix* did the same year. The "gristle gun" sequence, where a weapon is built from mutant animal remains and fires human teeth, is pure quality and a total winner for horror fans. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the "gameplay" logic within the VR world can feel a bit sluggish and dated, mimicking old-school point-and-click adventure tropes that might frustrate modern viewers. The dialogue is intentionally stilted to make the world feel "simulated," but it occasionally comes across as a bit of a damp squib in terms of acting. It misses a 9/10 mark because the layers-within-layers plot gets so convoluted by the final act that the ending might leave you more confused than satisfied. THE VERDICT An 8/10.
