Overview

Ford Brody, a Navy bomb expert, has just reunited with his family in San Francisco when he is forced to go to Japan to help his estranged father, Joe. Soon, both men are swept up in an escalating crisis when an ancient alpha predator arises from the sea to combat malevolent adversaries that threaten the survival of humanity. The creatures leave colossal destruction in their wake, as they make their way toward their final battleground: San Francisco.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Fifteen years after a mysterious meltdown at a Japanese nuclear plant, Ford Brody is pulled back into the chaos when his conspiracy-theorist dad discovers the truth: it wasn't an earthquake, it was something alive. Two massive, radiation-munching "MUTOs" wake up and start heading for San Francisco to grab a bite. Nature’s balancing act kicks in as the legendary Godzilla rises from the depths to put them in their place. It’s a grounded, gritty take on the King of the Monsters that treats a giant lizard like a natural disaster rather than a cartoon character. THE PROS This is a win for anyone who likes their tension to simmer before it boils over. The scale here is epic status—the HALO jump into a fog-covered San Francisco is a celebratory explosion of cinema that’ll give you proper chills. It’s highly recommended because it treats Godzilla with a sincere sense of awe; when you finally see him through the smoke, he feels massive and heavy. The sound design is a total belter, especially that iconic roar that literally shakes the room. It’s a good movie because it brings a punchy, realistic vibe back to a franchise that had become a bit of a joke. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the decision to kill off the most interesting human character in the first act was a bit of a head-scratcher—leaving us with a lead who’s a sincere bit "wooden." The pacing can feel sluggish for some because the movie is a total tease; it holds back the monster fights for a long time, which is a bit of a damp squib if you just want to see buildings fall down. They recorded the echo off the buildings to see how it would sound in a real city. • Breaking Bad Link: Bryan Cranston was hesitant to join another "blockbuster" after his experience on 'Total Recall', but he was so impressed by the grounded script that he signed on—despite his character's fate being a major talking point for fans.
