Overview

In the not-too-distant future, two drifters traveling through the desert stumble across the biggest gold nugget ever found and the dream of immense wealth and greed takes hold. They hatch a plan to excavate their bounty, with one man leaving to secure the necessary tools while the other remains with the gold. The man who remains must endure harsh desert elements, ravenous wild dogs, and mysterious intruders, while battling the sinking suspicion that he has been abandoned to his fate.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY Zac Efron stars in this brutal, sun-baked survival thriller set in a near-future desert wasteland. He plays a nameless drifter who hitches a ride to a remote compound, only for the truck to break down near a massive gold nugget wedged in the earth. While his partner (Anthony Hayes) leaves to find an excavator, Efron stays behind to guard the fortune against heat, dehydration, and packs of wild dogs. It’s a lean, minimalist story about greed and the psychological toll of isolation in a landscape that actively wants you dead. THE PROS Zac Efron is a total winner here; he delivers a sincere, transformative performance that is almost entirely silent, letting his deteriorating physicality do the talking. The makeup work is high-quality, showing the honest, horrific effects of extreme sun damage and dehydration in a way that’s genuinely gripping. It earns a 6/10 because the atmosphere is oppressive and legendary—you can practically feel the heat coming off the screen. The cinematography is top-tier, utilizing the vast, empty Australian outback to make the "epic" scale of the desert feel like a prison.
