⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY An absolute masterpiece of a drama about a proper genius who would rather drink pints with his mates and clean floors than face his own life. Will Hunting is a twenty-year-old working-class lad from South Boston who spends his days doing construction work and getting into scrap after scrap. But he also happens to have a photographic memory and can solve university-level math equations that stump the world's top professors. When a massive bar fight lands him in front of a judge, his only way out of a prison cell is to study math under a top professor and sit through weekly therapy sessions with a stubborn, grieving psychologist who refuses to take any of his cheek. THE PROS Robin Williams turns in an absolute career-best performance here as the therapist Sean Maguire, completely ditching his usual wacky antics to deliver a quiet, heavy, and deeply human character that will give you proper goosebumps. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck didn't just write a blinding script—their on-screen chemistry with the rest of the Boston lads feels so authentic it looks like the cameras just happened to catch a real group of mates joking about. The famous park bench monologue and the intense "it's not your fault" scene are handled with pure honesty and zero cheap Hollywood fluff. THE CONS The romantic subplot with the Harvard student Skylar is decent enough, but a couple of their heavy relationship arguments drag out a touch too long and slow down the blistering momentum of the therapy scenes. THE VERDICT An epic 9/10. This is a genuinely elite, gripping drama that hits you right in the gut and balances brilliant wit with a massive amount of heart. It easily bags a 9 because the writing is exceptionally sharp, the banter is top-tier, and the emotional payoff is completely earned without ever feeling forced or sappy. A proper, timeless classic that you can watch over and over again and never get sick of. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Clever Trap: Matt Damon and Ben Affleck grew so sick of studio bosses pretending to read their script that they intentionally inserted a completely random, highly graphic sex scene right in the middle of page 60 just to see who was actually paying attention. Harvey Weinstein was the only producer who noticed it, instantly winning him the film.• Honest Grief: The heartbreaking story Sean tells Will about his late wife farting in her sleep was completely made up on the spot by Robin Williams. Matt Damon’s massive belly laugh in the scene is entirely real, and if you look closely, you can even see the camera shaking slightly because the cameraman was laughing so hard.• Local Class: To make sure the blue-collar atmosphere felt completely right, the production team hired real, local Boston residents to play the background extras in the neighborhood pubs and construction sites instead of using posh Hollywood actors. THE VIBE Like sitting in a cozy, dim-lit pub on a freezing cold night, having a proper deep chat with an old mate over a few dark beers. It smells like stale tobacco, old wooden tables, and cold autumn rain on concrete. Smart, sharp, and properly moving.
