⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY An absolute comedy classic about Happy Gilmore, a failed ice hockey player with a ferocious slap shot and a massive anger management problem. When he discovers his beloved grandmother is about to lose her house to the taxman, Happy needs to find a massive wedge of cash fast. He accidentally discovers his wild hockey shot translates into a monstrous four hundred yard golf drive, earning him a spot on the professional golf tour. To secure the prize money, he has to learn how to control his volcanic temper while battling the arrogant tour champion, Shooter McGavin. THE PROS Adam Sandler is at the absolute peak of his nineties powers here, channeling a hilarious mix of childlike sweetness and explosive, psychotic rage. Christopher McDonald turns in one of the greatest comedy villain performances of all time as Shooter McGavin, making him a spectacularly smug snob you desperately want to see fail. The physical comedy is top-tier, anchored by the legendary, absurdly violent fistfight between Happy and television host Bob Barker on a pristine golf course that completely steals the entire movie. THE CONS The overall narrative is a highly predictable, standard sports-underdog story that doesn't offer any real plot surprises from start to finish. A few of the secondary gags and romantic subplots feel slightly rushed and thin, existing solely to move Happy from one golf tournament to the next. THE VERDICT A great 8/10. It is a legendary, flat-out hysterical comedy that defines a generation of humor and easily stands as one of Sandler's finest cinematic achievements. It confidently bags an 8 because the endless barrage of quotable lines, immaculate banter, and brilliant chemistry make it infinitely rewatchable. It only misses out on a higher epic rating because it follows a standard sports movie blueprint, but it remains a stellar choice for a proper laugh.
