⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Mabel Tanaka (Piper Curda) is a 19-year-old animal lover who would do anything to protect the local pond she grew up visiting with her grandmother. When the greedy Mayor Jerry (Jon Hamm) announces plans to pave over the habitat for a pointless highway, Mabel takes desperate measures. She "hops" her consciousness into a lifelike robotic beaver created by her biology professor, Dr. Sam (Kathy Najimy). Now living among the animals as "Mabel Beaver," she joins forces with the jovial King George (Bobby Moynihan) to unite the entire animal kingdom—from gossiping snakes to a sweet assassin shark—to stop the construction and save their home. THE PROS This is a winner because it’s Pixar at its most creative, ditching the sequels to give us something fresh and funny. Piper Curda is pure quality as Mabel, capturing that specific teenage "rage" against the world that feels very honest. Jon Hamm is epic status as the villain; he plays the Mayor with such a bumbling, self-obsessed energy that you can't help but laugh every time he’s on screen. It’s an 8/10 because the character designs are a total winner—each animal monarch, like Meryl Streep’s Insect Queen, has a punchy personality that feels unique. The message about cooperation isn't a damp squib either; it’s handled with a sincere touch that makes the final battle for the pond feel truly gripping. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the first part takes about 30 minutes to really get moving, which might feel a bit sluggish for younger kids. Some of the "hopping" logic is a bit quality-deficient if you think about it too hard, and the transition between Mabel’s human life and her beaver life can feel slightly disjointed. It misses a 9/10 mark because the ending is a bit predictable, following the standard Pixar "big final battle" blueprint that we've seen plenty of times before. At 104 minutes, it’s a good length, but a few of the middle scenes where Mabel is just learning to be a beaver can feel like a bit of a slog on a second watch. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and highly recommended for a family cinema trip—it’s the best original Pixar film in years. A winner for its wit, its weirdness, and the fact that it actually makes you care about a robotic beaver. Go and watch it for the "Pond Rules" scenes with King George—it’s quality cinema that will have the whole theatre giggling.
