⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Ang Lee takes a massive swing at an origin story that’s part Greek tragedy, part comic book fever dream. Bruce Banner is a repressed scientist who gets blasted with gamma radiation, but the "Monster" inside him is actually tied to his repressed childhood trauma and his mental father, David Banner. As the military—led by General Ross—tries to cage him, Bruce grows into a towering green behemoth that gets bigger the angrier he gets. It all ends in a surreal, desert showdown where Bruce faces off against his father, who has become a living elemental sponge. THE PROS The editing is epic status; Ang Lee used split-screens and transitions to make the movie look like an actual moving comic book, which was a quality, bold choice. Eric Bana brings a sincere, tortured vibe to Bruce that makes you feel the weight of his curse. The action is punchy once it kicks in, especially the desert sequence where Hulk takes on tanks and fighter jets—seeing him leap across miles of canyon is a winner. It’s a 7/10 because it tries to be a "film" rather than just a popcorn flick, focusing on the psychological damage behind the muscles. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because the pacing is seriously sluggish; it takes nearly forty-five minutes for the Hulk to even show up. The final battle with the "Absorbing Man" father is a bit of a damp squib, turning into a blurry mess of CGI clouds and bubbles that feels quality-deficient. The "Hulk Poodles" are a total winner for the wrong reasons—they’re hilarious but they kill the tension completely. It misses an 8/10 because the tone is so heavy it occasionally forgets to be fun.
