Overview

Having defeated the best fighters of the Imperial Japanese army in occupied Shanghai, Ip Man and his family settle in post-war Hong Kong. Struggling to make a living, Master Ip opens a kung fu school to bring his celebrated art of Wing Chun to the troubled youth of Hong Kong. ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Fleeing the Japanese occupation of Foshan, Ip Man settles in British-occupied Hong Kong in 1949. To support his growing family, he attempts to establish a Wing Chun school, but he quickly hits a wall: the local martial arts community is a closed circle governed by the formidable Master Hung (Sammo Hung). To earn the right to teach, Ip Man must survive a grueling challenge on a tabletop against the city’s top masters. Just as he gains their respect, a new threat arrives in the form of "Twister," a bigoted British world-champion boxer who holds a deep contempt for Chinese culture and martial arts. After a tragic loss in the ring, Ip Man must step up to prove that Wing Chun isn't just a style, but a symbol of national dignity. THE PROS The choreography is a winner, with Sammo Hung serving as both the action director and Donnie Yen’s primary rival. The tabletop duel between the two legends is epic status—a masterclass in balance and speed that remains one of the best fights in the entire genre. Donnie Yen is quality as always, maintaining that sincere, peaceful composure even when he’s being pushed to his limits. It’s an 8/10 because it successfully expands the world of the first film, leaning into the "Rocky IV" style of underdog drama that gets the blood pumping. The final bout against Twister is punchy and high-stakes, perfectly capturing the clash between Eastern technique and Western power. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the British villains are a bit of a damp squib in terms of character depth; they are written as cartoonish, one-note caricatures that make the conflict feel a bit melodramatic. The pacing can feel slightly sluggish in the middle as the film shifts gears from the "Masters vs. Masters" internal conflict to the "China vs. Britain" external conflict. It misses a 9/10 mark because some of the logic during the boxing match is a bit quality-deficient—the refereeing is so blatantly biased that it almost feels like a parody of a sports movie. To make the boxing look punchy and sincere, the actors had to carefully choreograph the hits to show the difference between a boxer's power and a Wing Chun master’s speed.
