⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY A massive, sweeping historical drama packed with peak nineties melodrama, gorgeous landscapes, and enough family tragedy to sink a ship. Set in the wild mountains of Montana, the story follows Colonel William Ludlow and his three completely different sons as they grow up, fall out, and fight through the horrors of World War I. Things get properly messy when the youngest brother brings his beautiful fiancée home, sparking a brutal chain reaction of jealousy, betrayal, and heartbreak that tears the entire family to bits over several decades. THE PROS Brad Pitt is a proper force of nature here as Tristan, rocking the ultimate wild-man look and carrying the entire film with pure star power and raw emotion. The cinematography is absolutely breathtaking, making the vast wilderness look so beautiful it feels like a painting come to life. Anthony Hopkins is brilliant as the stubborn old dad, especially in the later scenes where he delivers a masterclass in acting without needing a single word of dialogue. THE CONS The plot is so intensely dramatic that it can feel a bit like a high-budget soap opera where every single character is constantly suffering from some sort of tragic curse. It leans incredibly heavy on the romance and tears, which might make the lengthy two-and-a-bit-hour runtime feel a bit too long and self-indulgent if you aren't in the mood for a massive cry. THE VERDICT A great 8/10. It is a proper epic, old-school Hollywood blockbuster that handles its massive emotional scale perfectly without ever feeling cheap. It easily clears an 8 because the performances are top-tier, the music score is legendary, and it remains an incredibly gripping family saga that stays with you long after the credits roll. A stellar Friday night watch if you fancy a proper, heavy-hitting drama with some serious grit. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Grizzly Realism: The bear that attacks Tristan in the movie was actually a famous, highly trained animal actor named Bart the Bear, who also starred in movies like The Bear and Legends of the White Stallion.• Alternate Casting: The role of Tristan was originally offered to Johnny Depp, but he turned it down, opening the door for Brad Pitt to step in and turn it into one of his most iconic career-defining performances.• Northern Wilderness: Even though the movie is famously set in the beautiful mountains of Montana, the vast majority of the filming actually took place across Alberta and British Columbia in Canada. THE VIBE Like standing on top of a windy mountain in a leather jacket while a massive thunderstorm rolls across the valley. It smells like fresh pine needles, wet horse saddles, and expensive old whiskey. Massive, dramatic, and properly epic.
