Overview

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Two years after the first movie’s bloodbath, Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a vocal AI-skeptic and tech-regulation advocate. Her world is upended when a defense contractor uses her stolen designs to create AMELIA, a military-grade, brutally efficient assassin-android. When AMELIA goes rogue and starts hunting her creators, the government tries to shut her down, but she’s already hacked the grid. Realizing that the only thing that can stop a bad bot is a worse one, Gemma is forced to resurrect M3GAN’s consciousness from the cloud and give her a massive hardware upgrade. It’s an all-out "bot-vs-bot" war as M3GAN 2.0 tries to protect Cady and Gemma from her deadlier, more advanced successor. THE PROS The "fire with fire" concept is a winner; seeing M3GAN repositioned as a chaotic anti-hero is a quality shift for the sequel. Ivanna Sakhno is punchy as the villainous AMELIA, bringing a cold, robotic menace that makes M3GAN look practically cuddly. Allison Williams is quality once again as the frazzled Gemma, especially her "tech-TEDTalk" scene which is a sincere and funny critique of Silicon Valley. It’s a 7/10 because the action is cranked up to epic status—the car chase across Northern California is a standout sequence that makes the first movie look small. Jemaine Clement as the pompous billionaire Alton Appleton is a winner, providing some quality laughs in the middle of the carnage. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because at a full two hours, the pacing can feel slightly sluggish, especially during the heavy exposition about "cloud sovereignty" in the middle act. While the M3GAN vs. AMELIA showdown is quality, it leans a bit too hard into CGI compared to the tactile, creepy practical effects that made the first one so effective. It misses an 8/10 mark because the ending feels a bit like a damp squib, clearly designed to setup a "M3GAN-verse" rather than giving us a definitive conclusion. Some of the quips from M3GAN feel a bit quality-deficient and repetitive, trying a little too hard to recreate her viral status from the original. THE VERDICT A 7/10. Decent and highly recommended for fans of the first flick who want more scale and bot-on-bot action. It’s a winner for its fun performances and sharp social commentary. Go and watch it on Netflix for the makeover montage—it’s quality entertainment. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Dancing Queen: To keep the "viral" momentum going, the filmmakers hired three different choreographers to design M3GAN’s new combat-dance style. Amie Donald (the body actress) performed all the stunts herself, including a back-flipping sequence that took six weeks to master. • Exoskeleton Tech: The "robotic exoskeleton" Gemma builds in the film was based on real-world prototypes currently used in physical therapy. The production team wanted the "good" tech to look sincere and functional to contrast with AMELIA’s sleek, military aesthetic. • Casting Near-Miss: Before Jemaine Clement was cast as the tech mogul, the producers reportedly considered a quality-deficient "lookalike" of a real-world social media CEO, but decided a fictional character would allow for punchier satire. THE VIBE Like a sleek new smartphone that’s slightly too hot to hold. It smells like ozone, expensive perfume, and warm plastic.
