Overview

In 1971, air-conditioner repairman and boat enthusiast Jim McCormick entertains his desire to 'go down' as a legend in the record books when the Gold Cup hydroplane boat race improbably comes to his small town of Madison, Indiana. Immediately, Jim seizes his opportunity to enter the contest. ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Jim McCormick is an air-conditioning repairman in Madison, Indiana, with a serious obsession: hydroplane racing. It’s 1971, and the town is on the verge of economic collapse. Jim’s last shot at saving the town's pride is to enter the Miss Madison—a beat-up, community-owned boat—into the Gold Cup Championship. Despite being the underdog with a volunteer crew and a shoestring budget, Jim has to face off against the corporate-funded giants of the racing world to bring a trophy home to a town that’s lost its spark. THE PROS The racing sequences are punchy and feel surprisingly fast for a mid-2000s indie flick. Jim Caviezel brings a quiet intensity to the role that keeps the emotional stakes grounded, avoiding the usual over-the-top sports movie tropes. It’s a decent watch because it captures that specific, gritty feel of 1970s Americana and the genuine desperation of a dying town. Seeing the community rally around a hunk of metal and an airplane engine is an epic bit of storytelling that hits the right notes. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because the "underdog sports" formula is followed so strictly you can practically tick off the clichés as they happen. The pacing feels a bit sluggish in the middle while Jim is moping about his family life and bills. It misses an 8/10 mark because the secondary characters are a bit of a damp squib, lacking the development needed to make the victory feel truly earned by the whole team. THE VERDICT A 7/10. Decent and a solid recommendation if you’re a fan of true stories or classic boat racing. It’s a bit of a hidden gem for a Sunday afternoon. In real life, the Miss Madison was indeed the only community-owned boat in the circuit and was powered by a vintage Allison aircraft engine. • Location Work: The production was actually filmed in Madison, Indiana. Many of the locals who lived through the real 1971 race were used as extras, and the real Miss Madison boat was brought out of retirement for some of the wide shots. THE VIBE Like a cold beer and a lawn chair by the river. It smells like diesel fumes, river mud, and grilled burgers.
