Overview

One of the world's most acclaimed comedies, M*A*S*H focuses on three Korean War Army surgeons brilliantly brought to life by Donald Sutherland, Tom Skerritt and Elliott Gould. Though highly skilled and deeply dedicated, they adopt a hilarious, lunatic lifestyle as an antidote to the tragedies of their Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, and in the process infuriate Army bureaucrats. Robert Duvall, Gary Burghoff and Sally Kellerman co-star as a sanctimonious Major, an other-worldly Corporal, and a self-righteous yet lusty nurse.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Before the TV show became a cozy living room staple, the 1970 movie was a jagged, blood-soaked middle finger to the establishment. It’s the Korean War seen through a martini glass—Hawkeye and Trapper John are essentially high-functioning sociopaths with scalpels who cope with the endless stream of casualties by being absolute menaces to anyone with a rank or a Bible. THE PROS Robert Altman’s "overlapping dialogue" makes the camp feel alive, messy, and loud—like you’re eavesdropping on a conversation you shouldn't hear. Robert Duvall is incredible as Frank Burns; he’s far more dangerous and pathetic here than the "bumbling" version in the sitcom. The surgery scenes actually look like surgery (read: there is a lot of blood), which makes the dark humor feel earned rather than cheap. THE CONS It hasn't aged gracefully in the "sensitivity" department. The way the doctors treat the nurses—especially the whole "Hot Lips" shower prank—is pretty mean-spirited and can make for a rough watch today. Also, the final third of the movie randomly turns into a full-blown football comedy, which feels like the director just decided he’d rather be filming a sports flick for thirty minutes. THE VERDICT It’s a classic for a reason, but it’s definitely "MAS*H with the safety off." If you only know the TV show, this will feel like the gritty reboot that actually came first. It's cynical, chaotic, and brilliant, provided you can stomach the 1970s "boys will be boys" toxicity. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA Robert Duvall and Donald Sutherland hated Altman’s improvisational style so much during filming that they actually tried to get him fired. Ironically, the movie became a massive hit and launched both of their careers into the stratosphere. Also, the iconic song "Suicide is Painless" was written by Altman’s 14-year-old son because the director wanted something "stupid enough" that he couldn't write it himself. THE VIBE Like a bachelor party held in a graveyard—dark, drunken, and desperately trying to laugh so nobody starts screaming.
