⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY Lucy (Rayna Tharani) is just trying to survive another dysfunctional family Christmas when her mother, Carol, suddenly disappears on Christmas Eve. While her father and siblings revert to their usual selfish habits, Lucy is left to track her down. It’s a grounded, dark comedy that ditches the tinsel and fake cheer for a gritty look at the people who actually make the holidays a nightmare. It’s about the messy reality of family life and the realization that sometimes "good enough" is the best you’re going to get. THE PROS The film works because it refuses to be a typical "holiday miracle" story. The dialogue is sharp and captures that specific, exhausted tone of a sibling who has spent years being the only responsible adult in the room. It hits a 6 because the performances feel lived-in; the family arguments aren't cinematic or polished, they’re petty and awkward, which makes them much more relatable. It’s a smart choice for anyone who finds the usual festive films a bit too sugary and wants a story that reflects the actual stress of heading home for the winter. THE CONS The low-budget nature of the film shows in its limited locations, which can make the whole thing feel a bit static and stage-like at times. It stays at a 6 because the pacing is quite slow, and the mystery of the missing mother doesn't have enough tension to drive the plot forward as much as it should. It misses a higher mark because some of the supporting characters are so unlikable that it becomes a struggle to stay invested in their journey, leaving you feeling as drained as the lead character by the time the credits roll. THE VERDICT 6/10. A dry, honest, and cynical take on Christmas. It’s not going to give you a warm glow, but it’s a fair shout if you want a holiday movie that understands the grit of family dysfunction. A decent watch for the "Scrooges" out there.
