⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY A brilliantly weird, dark, and chaotic sci-fi comedy that proves Director Bong Joon-ho is still one of the absolute best at making big-budget madness look easy. The story follows Mickey Barnes, a regular lad who is so desperate to escape dangerous loan sharks on Earth that he signs up for the ultimate nightmare job: becoming an "Expendable" on a spaceship colony heading to a freezing ice world. His entire job description is literally to die doing the dangerous dirty work, only to be printed back to life as a fresh clone with his old memories intact. Things go completely tits up when one version survives a disaster, returns to base, and finds out Mickey 18 has already been printed. THE PROS Robert Pattinson is an absolute joy to watch here, putting on a bizarre, squeaky voice and playing two completely different versions of himself at the same time with fantastic comic timing. Mark Ruffalo is equally hysterical as the bumbling, power-mad dictator running the colony, basically playing a massive, cartoonish politician that you will love to hate. The practical look of the grimy spaceship and the ice planet is top-tier, and the dark humor hits the mark perfectly, especially during the relentless, laugh-out-loud montage of Mickey dying in dozens of horrific ways just to reboot the system. THE CONS The opening ten minutes feel a bit clunky, with some slightly dodgy CGI work on the snowy landscapes before the film finally settles into its proper rhythm. While the satire about greedy corporations using human beings like disposable office printer cartridges is very funny, it drops any real subtlety in the final act, hammering the political metaphors a bit too hard instead of letting the comedy do the heavy lifting. THE VERDICT A great 8/10. It is a wildly creative, funny, and deeply unconventional sci-fi ride that feels completely refreshing compared to the usual boring space blockbusters. It easily clears an 8 because Pattinson’s performance is brilliant and the script balances laugh-out-loud slapstick with proper, clever existential dread. It only misses out on a higher score because the pacing gets a bit messy during the big corporate standoff at the end, but it is a cracking Friday night watch that proves bizarre sci-fi is alive and well. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Salty Snow: To create the vast, freezing landscapes of the alien planet Niflheim without freezing the cast, the crew filled a massive airship hangar in Cardington with hundreds of tons of Epsom salts to act as the fake snow.• Double Trouble: Because Robert Pattinson had to play two versions of Mickey interacting in the same room, the crew had to shoot every single scene twice, which completely doubled his filming time on the studio sets.• Strike Delay: The movie was originally supposed to hit cinemas in March 2024, but it got completely pulled from the schedule and delayed for a full year due to the massive Hollywood actors' and writers' strikes shuffling the studio's entire release slate. THE VIBE Like waking up with a massive hangover only to find out you've been cloned and now you have to argue with yourself about who gets to eat the last slice of pizza. It smells like cold metal, ozone, wet salt, and cheap space rations. Unhinged, clever, and properly funny.
