⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 5/10 THE SUMMARY Cairo Sweet (Jenna Ortega) is a gifted, wealthy, and bored student who decides to test the boundaries of her creative writing teacher, Jonathan Miller (Martin Freeman). After he assigns a creative project, Cairo writes a provocative story that blurs the lines between fiction and reality, dragging them both into a messy web of obsession and intellectual manipulation. It’s a dark, slow-burning drama that explores the power dynamics between an aging, failed writer and a young woman who knows exactly how to get under his skin. THE PROS The tension between Ortega and Freeman is palpable, and they both lean into the awkward, gritty discomfort of the situation. Jenna Ortega brings a sharp, icy confidence to Cairo, making it clear she’s the one in control of the "game" from the start. It hits a 5 because the film looks great; the cinematography uses a lush, gothic aesthetic that makes the Tennessee woods feel like a dark fairy tale. There are some honest, biting observations about the ego of failed artists and the predatory nature of "mentorship" that give the script a bit of weight in the first half. THE CONS The script is incredibly overwritten, with characters speaking in flowery, poetic monologues that nobody would ever use in real life.
