Overview

A Russian circus visits the US. A clown wants to defect, but doesn't have the nerve. His saxophone playing friend however comes to the decision to defect in the middle of Bloomingdales. He is befriended by the black security guard and falls in love with the Italian immigrant from behind the perfume counter. We follow his life as he works his way through the American dream and tries to find work as a musician.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY A charming, funny, and surprisingly touching comedy-drama about a brilliant Russian circus musician who decides to defect to the West on a whim. While visiting New York City with his state-controlled troupe, Vladimir sneaks away from his KGB handlers and completely vanishes into the chaotic crowds of a Bloomingdale's department store. Left entirely on his own with zero money and barely any English, he has to navigate the confusing, fast-paced world of American capitalism while building a completely new life from scratch. THE PROS Robin Williams is absolutely fantastic here, ditching his usual rapid-fire comic energy to deliver a deeply sweet, grounded performance that shows a massive amount of heart. He even learned Russian for the part, and his confusion at the sheer overload of Western choices—like having a full panic attack in the coffee aisle—is brilliant to watch. The film does a proper job of showing the immigrant experience honestly, capturing the rough, lonely side of city life alongside the excitement of freedom. THE CONS The middle section of the movie loses its way a bit, slowing down to focus on a romantic subplot that lacks any real spark or narrative punch. At nearly two hours, it definitely feels a bit bloated, and a few of the overly patriotic speeches towards the end feel a touch too corny and heavy-handed compared to the sharp, witty humor of the opening hour. THE VERDICT A solid 7/10. It is a warm, genuinely funny, and beautifully acted piece of eighties cinema that still holds up perfectly today. It easily grabs a 7 because Williams is wonderful to watch and the retail defection scene is an absolute classic moment. It misses out on a higher score because the pacing drags quite a bit once the initial fish-out-of-water comedy settles down, but it remains a cracking, feel-good film for a lazy afternoon. THE VIBE Like walking out of a freezing cold, quiet street straight into a massive, neon-lit New York diner packed with shouting people. It smells like hot filter coffee, fresh hotdogs, and old leather suitcases. Warm, loud, and properly hopeful.
