Overview

Loving but irresponsible dad Daniel Hillard, estranged from his exasperated spouse, is crushed by a court order allowing only weekly visits with his kids. When Daniel learns his ex needs a housekeeper, he gets the job -- disguised as a British nanny. ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARYA brilliant, chaotic, and deeply moving comedy classic that manages to balance absolute madness with a proper, realistic look at family heartbreak. The story follows Daniel Hillard, a talented but completely irresponsible freelance voice actor who loses custody of his three kids following a messy divorce from his exhausted wife. Desperate to spend time with his children, Daniel spots an advert for a housekeeper and uses his makeup skills to transform into Euphegenia Doubtfire—a strict but loving sixty-year-old Scottish nanny. THE PROSRobin Williams puts in a legendary, powerhouse performance, shifting between lightning-fast ad-libs and genuine emotional vulnerability with absolute ease. The physical makeup work is spectacular, creating a completely believable character that allows the film to milk every single ounce of comedy out of Daniel’s frantic double-life. What makes it special is that it refuses to sugarcoat the realities of a broken home, delivering a warm, honest family message that still hits home perfectly today. THE CONSWhen you step back and look at Daniel’s actions, his elaborate deception is incredibly unhinged and crosses a massive line that makes a few scenes feel slightly uncomfortable by modern standards. Pierce Brosnan’s character, Stuart, is written a bit too much like a flawless, handsome target just so the audience can chuckle when Daniel throws a lime at his head. At over two hours, the frantic restaurant climax drags the runtime out a bit too much before getting to the resolution. THE VERDICTA great 8/10. It is a laugh-out-loud, beautifully acted, and timeless comedy that stands tall as one of the definitive high-concept films of the nineties. It easily earns an 8 because Robin Williams is an absolute force of nature and the script has a massive amount of heart that handles a sensitive subject beautifully. It only misses a higher score because the pacing gets a bit clunky during the final restaurant scramble, but it remains a proper masterpiece of the genre.
